Intermediate european mathematical olympiad

Who is it for?

This competition is aimed at learners in Grades 8, 9 and 10 (UK Years 9, 10 and 11) and is linked to the learning objectives of these age ranges for students working towards GCSEs, IGCSEs or equivalents in Grade 10.

What is the content?

Topics include, but are not limited to:


  • Number: Percentage change, Ratio, Proportionality, Bases, Indices, root arithmetic, logarithms
  • Geometry: surface area and volume, circle theorems, trigonometry, arcs and sectors, vectors
  • Statistics: averages, data representation, frequency tables
  • Probability: combined events, predicted outcomes, combinations and permutations

How is it formatted?

The competition has five monthly 9 question rounds.

  • 3 multiple choice and 6 free answer questions
  • Rounds held once a month
  • Scores are given per round, and cumulatively
  • Schools enter their top 10 students per round for the school score
